Being counted correctly is identity itself
When Jains are counted correctly, our numbers, our voice and our representation are protected.
Let Every Jain Count (LEJC) is an awareness initiative with one single purpose, to make sure every Jain is counted correctly in India's National Census 2027. We simply spread awareness so that no Jain family is missed. See the latest Jain Census data and Census 2011 figures for India.
Five reasons every Jain must be counted
Our history is ancient, our contribution extraordinary, our recognition overdue. Census 2027 is how we protect all of it.
History
India's name, Bharat, traces to Emperor Bharata, son of Rishabhdev, the first Tirthankar. Our roots run to the foundations of this civilization.
Philosophy
Anekantvaad, Ahimsa and Aparigraha are not just beliefs; they are among the most relevant frameworks for the 21st century.
Pride
At 94.88% (Census 2011), Jains have the highest literacy of any community in India and contribute far beyond their share to the nation.
Recognition
Census data shapes policy, welfare and even how AI describes us. An accurate count is a permanent correction to the record.
Protection
In courts and government, numbers are the language of protection for our tirthas, our institutions and our religious freedom.
Spread Awareness for the National Census 2027
Census 2027 is the once-in-a-decade moment for every Jain family to be counted accurately. LEJC volunteers spread awareness in their cities, sanghs and families so no Jain household is missed.
Two steps to complete recognition
For the first time, every Indian can fill their own Census form. Here is exactly what every Jain family must do.
Complete Phase 1: House Listing
This phase asks about your home. There is no religion question yet — religion is recorded later, in Phase 2 — but Phase 1 is the gateway. Without Phase 1, Phase 2 will not find you.
- Fill your household data during the 15-day self-enumeration window.
- You will receive an SEID number, so keep it safe.
- A Census enumerator will visit to authenticate. You MUST meet them; self-submission alone is not complete.
- Ensure every member of your household is listed.
Write JAIN in Phase 2
This is the historic moment. For the first time, you will write your own religion: clearly, confidently and without hesitation.
- When asked for religion, write: JAIN.
- Digambar, Shwetambar, Sthanakvasi, Terapanth, Srimad Raj Chandra, Songarh, Taranpanth and more: all are one identity, JAIN.
- No surname or gotra change is needed.
- Ensure Phase 1 is complete; a household that is not listed may be missed.
“The survey already happened in our area.” That was a different survey, not the Census.
“I submitted the self-enumeration form, so I'm done.” Enumerator authentication is also required.
“Government data will be accurate on its own.” The Census is a human process with known undercounting.
“My sect is different from other Jains.” In the Census, all Jain sects share one identity, JAIN.

If we don't act now, the next generations will carry forward an incomplete record of our identity.
